Remote access for UK law firms

Remote access for a UK law firm is a named person on the office computer that holds Actionstep, the bundle and the email. DeskZap is priced per operator in pounds. A client who will only read out a code can still be helped, and the activity log shows who connected.

01 / The work

What three jobs do law firms run on the office PC?

The matter is on an office computer, or on a screen a client will share for a few minutes. The firm needs a name on that session.

01
From home

The fee-earner on the office machine

Actionstep, the bundle and the email sit on the office PC. DeskZap Host lets the fee-earner sign in as themselves and use what is already installed. On Business and Advanced the session follows each monitor, bundle on one screen and the attendance note on the other.

02
A hearing day

The document that is only on one PC

A signed PDF or a scanned exhibit is on the office machine. Remote print sends a page to a printer on the operator's side. The session is that PC, under a named login.

03
A locum

Onboarding a locum or a new solicitor

Business and Advanced let you invite them by email, set a role and scope a device group, so they see one set of machines. Remove the user on the Friday. The activity log can say it was them.

02 / Why DeskZap

Where does DeskZap win for a UK law firm?

The work is one computer and a name in the log, at a price finance can compare.

  • A published price per fee-earner or operator

Starter is £5 a month or £50 a year. Business is £7 or £70. Advanced is £10 or £100. Per named user, in pounds, with no custom quote required.

  • The floor of PCs does not multiply the bill

You pay for the people who connect. Starter covers 2 managed computers per user, Business 10, and Advanced has no per-user cap.

  • A short code when a client will not install

A client with a PDF that will not open can read a 9-digit code. It lasts 5 minutes. They install nothing and create no account.

  • Remote print for the page that has to exist on paper

Remote print, from Starter upwards, prints from the remote PC to a printer the operator can use. Test that printer during the trial.

  • Per-monitor sessions when the desk has two screens

Business and Advanced open the office PC per monitor, so the bundle stays put. Starter is the single-screen plan.

  • An activity log, and self-host on Advanced

The log shows who connected, which machine and when. Advanced self-hosts the control plane when that metadata should stay on UK infrastructure the firm operates.

03 / Client data

How do you show who opened a client file?

The file stays in Actionstep or in the folder on the office PC. DeskZap is the named way onto that PC, with a log.

Read self-hosted remote desktop and data residency and the features page.

01

A solicitor signs in as themselves

Named accounts replace a shared PIN. TOTP two-factor authentication is available. Business and Advanced add roles, invites and device groups, so a locum is scoped to a matter team and removed when the booking ends.

02

The log says who, which machine, when

Session history records the operator, the device, the time and the policy. The screen is AES-256 end-to-end encrypted. The relay cannot decrypt it.

03

Advanced self-host for the connection records

When connection metadata should stay on infrastructure the firm runs in the UK, Advanced self-hosts the control plane. The matter stays in the system the firm already uses.

Session recording with retention, USB redirection and pen support are part of DeskZap Support. The activity log records the named operator, machine and time on every session.

04 / Price

What does remote access cost per solicitor?

You pay for each person who connects. A small firm can start on Starter and move an individual to Business when they need the second monitor, groups and multi-user management. Advanced is the self-host plan.

Yearly figures are the annual total per named user.

05 / Questions

What do law firms ask before they buy?

The questions a managing partner or a COLP actually sends. Each answer can be forwarded on its own. GDPR-compliant remote desktop and GDPR remote desktop policy cover the neighbouring questions.

01Can a fee-earner work from home on the office PC?Show

Yes. Host on the office PC lets them sign in as themselves and use Actionstep and the document folders already installed. The price is per operator. Business and Advanced can follow each monitor.

02Where does session data live if a client asks?Show

The screen is AES-256 end-to-end encrypted, and the relay cannot decrypt it. The activity log stores who connected, which machine and when, in the control plane. Advanced can self-host that plane. Session recording with retention is part of DeskZap Support, alongside the activity log.

03Do we pay per machine or per solicitor?Show

Per person. Starter is £5 a month or £50 a year, for 2 managed computers per user. Business is £7 or £70, for 10, with multi-user management. Advanced is £10 or £100, with no per-user cap and self-host. The trial is 7 days on Starter features.

04Can we help a client who will not install software?Show

Yes. A Quick Support code is 9 digits and 5 minutes, with no account and no Host install. That suits a PDF that will not open before a hearing. A weekly machine takes Host, once agreed. The end user still needs no DeskZap account.

05Can we see who opened a matter PC, and when?Show

Yes. The activity log records the named operator, the machine and the time. Business and Advanced add device groups, so a locum can be scoped to one group and removed when the booking ends.

06Does DeskZap integrate with Actionstep?Show

There is no Actionstep integration. It stays the practice system on the office PC or in the browser. The session opens that PC. DeskZap does not sync matters, push documents or hold an Actionstep login.

06 / Next

What should a law firm do next?

Run the 7-day trial on the office PC a fee-earner actually uses, then read the pricing page with finance. The GDPR guide and the policy post are the two reads to put next to a client questionnaire.

Then read GDPR-compliant remote desktop and GDPR remote desktop policy. Back to all solutions
